Other chief executives at the White House privately challenged Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on his public rhetoric concerning the dangers of artificial intelligence. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and other leaders asked Amodei why he had been so extreme in his warnings about AI capabilities and risks, according to the Wall Street Journal. Amodei responded that the industry must be honest with the public rather than downplaying risks, while Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg told him that the solution is to follow the industry's new safety principles.
The friction comes after a series of meetings including a first-ever private dinner between Trump and Amodei on September 27. Amodei previously called for the industry to slow development, prompting Trump to mock him on Truth Social and a White House memo to label his philosophy as cultish. Following the dinner, Amodei said his concerns about super intelligence had eased and that the U.S. can win safely, while Trump praised the CEO and asserted the U.S. holds a lead of 1 to 1.5 years over China in the multi-trillion-dollar sector.
