Asked on CBS whether he would hand over Anthropic or its technology, CEO Dario Amodei suggested shared oversight by democratically elected governments, warning that a single government could abuse AI as easily as a company. “I don't know about handing over, but some kind of oversight, some kind of joint governance,” he said, adding that such an arrangement would take years.

Amodei also accused the AI industry of concealing dangers. “And I think for too long the industry lied to people about the fact that this technology had risk,” he said, while maintaining that Anthropic had not done so. He defended Claude’s biology safeguards, citing attempts to use the model to build biological weapons, and urged the US and China to seek limits on AI uses that could enable bioterrorism.

The interview followed his Saturday call to slow improvements in AI capabilities so safety work can keep up, rather than halt model training. Anthropic committed to giving independent evaluators permanent access to its systems comparable to that of employees, allowing them to verify safety practices, report incidents and assess models during training. OpenAI’s Sam Altman backed the proposal and committed to sim

The the worry I have - I am concerned that one single government could abuse this technology just as easily as a single company could. But I think a combination of democratically elected governments - I don't know about handing over, but some kind of oversight, some kind of joint governance. Again, that would be the work of years, but I wonder if that's the direction we need to go in.”x.com

We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training.”x.com

People ask me that question all the time: "Why isn’t this being built by government?" And the strangest thing about it is I agree with them. I’m uncomfortable.”x.com
