Chris Malone departed his role overseeing the construction of OpenAI's computing infrastructure last week. The former Meta and Google strategist joined in March 2025 shortly after the announcement of Stargate, a massive computing project designed to scale the company's capabilities. Malone’s exit follows a series of senior leadership departures as OpenAI works to establish its own proprietary data centers.
The departure occurs as OpenAI projects approximately $750 billion in computing spending through 2030 to secure AI capacity. The company is currently reorganizing its infrastructure team and shifting toward leasing entire data centers to support its growth ahead of a planned initial public offering in 2027.
