The App Store's travel category ranking shifted this week as Tesla's ride-hailing software overtook established competitors like Lyft and Waymo. This popularity spike coincides with the deployment of steering-wheel-free Cybercab vehicles in Austin, Texas. Tesla's autonomous fleet traveled 1 million unsupervised miles with no human safety rider, adding 620,000 miles in six weeks over the 380,000 reported on July 22.

Autopilot and AI Vice President Ashok Elluswamy detailed these metrics at a Cybercab event to highlight the scale of the "nobody in the loop" software. Waymo, a primary rival, reported 200 million total miles last week and hit the 1 million mile threshold in 2023. Uber is currently coordinating with taxi drivers to slow the general rollout of such autonomous services.
