US companies more than tripled their per employee spend on artificial intelligence across several adoption tiers in recent months. The top 1% of US businesses reached a record median expenditure of $7,400 per staff member in July, compared to $11.95 spent by the median firm.

This investment is concentrating among a small group of companies, with the top 10% spending a record $650 per employee. The gap between the highest spenders and the typical company has widened to more than 600 times, and the top 1% have increased their spend from under $1,000 per employee in early 2024.
