President Donald Trump refused to partner with Xi Jinping on the regulation of artificial intelligence, arguing that such cooperation would hinder the ability of American firms to outperform Chinese competitors. Speaking on Tuesday, Trump stated the US currently leads China and other nations in AI development and intends to maintain that advantage, despite having discussed the technology with the Chinese leader during Xi's visit to the US last week.
The stance came during a White House lunch with 31 tech executives and government officials, including leaders from Nvidia, Meta, Microsoft, and Google. House Speaker Mike Johnson urged for voluntary industry guardrails instead of government-mandated moratoriums, which he called a potential "Chinese psyop" intended to slow US progress. Attendees also included Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who joined after a private dinner with Trump, and OpenAI President Greg Brockman, who attended while CEO Sam Altman was at a developer event.
