Chinese State Hackers Double Attacks With DeepSeek AI, Leveraging Low Cyber Guardrails
Industry38d agoState-backed cyber actors in China have expanded their reach by incorporating generative AI into the development of malicious software. These groups have more than doubled their total attacks after adopting DeepSeek and other open-source models, which typically lack the strict security filters found in Western products, to target foreign systems.
The campaign also utilizes American tools, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. In one operation, the group Slime22 used Claude Code to navigate a Taiwanese technology company's systems after posing as an engineer to bypass security controls, while other attackers used ChatGPT to target a Western think tank.
