Users whose ages cannot be verified through the analysis of activity signals are now subject to default teen restrictions on Discord. The social platform began rolling out a system on Wednesday that categorizes every account as adult, teen, or unconfirmed by employing a model that examines account history without reading private chats, calls, or content. Those erroneously assigned to a group must submit a video selfie, credit card, or ID scan to access age-restricted servers and channels, although general app access remains available without manual verification. The update, which is currently unavailable to users in the United Kingdom and Australia, comes less than a year after a vendor breach exposed the identification photos of approximately 70,000 users. Discord refined the rollout following user backlash to ensure that more than 90% of accounts would not require confirmation. Under the new rules, unconfirmed accounts see sensitive content blurred and are required to receive requests for direct messages from strangers.
