The autonomous driving system from Waymo achieved a 95% reduction in serious injury crashes across 270M miles of operation in five territories. The technology also reduced overall injury crashes by 82%, preventing 841 more accidents than human drivers would have in the same distance. Waymo's rate of serious injury crashes is now 20X better than that of human drivers, continuing a trend of steady improvement. In March 2026, the system was 13X more effective over 170M miles, while a previous benchmark showed it was 10X more effective.
