The semiconductor leader provided funding to 3 developers of power and land for data centers to secure the physical infrastructure required for its AI chip deployments. Nvidia gave billions of dollars to Lancium after OpenAI considered acquiring the firm, and entered a strategic partnership through a minority investment in Cloverleaf to secure site electricity and utility infrastructure.
The investments are part of a bundling strategy to stave off alternative hardware from competitors including Google and OpenAI. The chief executive officer of Cloverleaf said the deals are also intended to prevent a potential chip glut by ensuring a steady pipeline of operational data centers.
