Nvidia and AMD have increased their orders for AI chips beyond the current capacity of the world's largest foundry. TSMC has responded by raising its quarterly chipmaking equipment purchase estimate to approximately 1.9 times its December projection. The company is currently building and outfitting about 20 factories worldwide, exceeding its typical pace of 4 to 5 facilities at once.
A shortage of experienced construction workers in Taiwan is hindering the buildout, the company's co-COO said. Broadcom has also raised orders as TSMC attempts to furnish new production sites both at home and overseas to support the growth of AI compute.
