Law enforcement agencies nationwide are cancelling contracts for automated license plate readers developed by Flock Safety. These departments are installing similar surveillance infrastructure from competing vendors, such as Axon, to ensure continuity in their monitoring operations following public outcry over privacy.

The substitution of one surveillance provider for another has drawn criticism from advocates who claim the change fails to address the expansion of mass monitoring. Some of the alternative systems being integrated into city infrastructure may be more intrusive than the Flock installations they displace.
