President Donald Trump estimated the US is roughly one year ahead of China in artificial intelligence and warned that losing that advantage would leave the country in a “very bad position.” Asked whether he was worried AI could cause human extinction, he replied, “no, I don't have any concerns,” saying his priority was maintaining the lead over China.
His comments followed Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon’s resignation over concerns that AI companies are building systems capable of improving themselves that could spiral out of control. Coxon accused Anthropic and OpenAI of “gambling with our lives.” Anthropic safety researcher Evan Hubinger put his personal estimate of the chance AI kills all humans within the next decade at more than 10%, saying the company does not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence.
Pentagon technology chief Emil Michael also pushed back on extinction warnings, calling fears of mass job losses and runaway AI part of a growing “doom loop.” Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang rejected Coxon’s claims as outlandish, deeply untrue, arrogant and ignorant of the industry’s safety work.
