Hardware 4 components from a Model Y were installed in a 2022 Model 3 by a Polish modder to bypass existing system constraints. The installation utilized adapters to maintain existing camera cables and required light ECU hacking to ensure the new compute system functioned.

The upgrade enables the vehicle to run full Full Self-Driving (FSD), providing the compute required for future unsupervised self-driving. Tesla had previously excluded Hardware 3 owners from these features due to hardware limitations, despite promises from Elon Musk to investigate retrofit options.
