A new generative model that can impersonate humans in real-time video calls has triggered warnings of a 'dystopian world' and a wave of criticism from U.S. lawmakers. Senator Bernie Sanders has called for an immediate halt to AI development after Tavus's Griffin model fooled 48% of 54 test participants into believing they were speaking with a person during one-minute live chats. This outperforms the less than 3% pass rate of previous systems, prompting fears from critics that the technology will be used to facilitate sophisticated scams by impersonating family members or government officials.
Tavus CEO Hassaan Raza stated that Griffin is a limited research preview and not yet available for public use. The company is currently collaborating with partners on regulation and disclosure systems to ensure users know they are interacting with an AI, while proposing future applications in digital tutoring and healthcare. The model uses a full-duplex system to see and hear users while simultaneously generating video responses, a capability that placed it first on Nvidia's benchmark for full-duplex AI video.
