A new bill introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Greg Casar targets the development of artificial superintelligence through a total ban. The proposal also mandates an immediate global pause on advanced AI, citing risks to American security and freedom and claiming that industry leaders acknowledge they cannot control the technology they are building.
The congressional action follows a Fox News op-ed in which Sanders called for an international agreement on frontier AI. Sanders urged the U.S. and China to negotiate terms for this pause during a scheduled meeting between Trump and Xi in Washington later this month to prevent the deployment of uncontrollable systems.
