A trio of primary backers has provided a combined $110 billion of the $122 billion in commitments promised to the creator of ChatGPT as of October 1. Nvidia and SoftBank each transferred a final $10 billion on that date to fulfill their respective $30 billion pledges for a financing round that began last spring. Amazon previously completed its $50 billion investment in July. The payments bring SoftBank's total investment in the startup to $64.6 billion, which represents a stake of roughly 13% of the company.
The capital injection closes out the March round that valued OpenAI at $852 billion. This coincides with reports that the company is now in early discussions to raise at least $30 billion in a bridge round at a valuation of approximately $1.4 trillion. CEO Sam Altman has postponed the firm's initial public offering due to safety concerns, though investors are reportedly driving the demand for this new private financing to support compute and data center expansion.
