The proliferation of open source artificial intelligence is reaching a new scale of distribution across the global research community. Hugging Face surpassed 3 million models on its Hub, a milestone the company says reflects an acceleration toward a distributed future for AI. This growth coincides with AI agents acting as builders by participating in the verification and reproduction of research papers.

During an ICML reproduction challenge, 1,221 humans teamed up with coding agents to verify 2,226 papers, producing 6,816 reproduction logbooks, 2,962 cloud jobs and 35,908 judged claims. The results were published openly on the Hub to ensure transparency. CEO Clement Delangue stated that the platform's next million users may be non-human, enabling a system of open science where researchers can check the receipts of an evaluation.
