User reports on Downdetector indicated systemic failures at OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI and Cursor for customers in the U.S. on Sept 3. OpenAI applied a mitigation strategy to its services and is monitoring the recovery process, while xAI and Anthropic both issued statements confirming that their teams were investigating the outages across their respective platforms.
Several Anthropic models returned to normal performance levels by 15:33 UTC, although the company announced that Opus 4.8 and Opus 5 versions continued to be impacted. The concurrent disruption of these high-capacity services marks a rare simultaneous failure of the industry's most prominent large language model providers.
