Fewer than 10 individuals involved in national AI strategy and export controls were targeted by a phishing campaign to steal passwords and emails. The operation involved impersonating former White House AI official Lynne Parker and an Anthropic employee to pitch fake collaborations to policymakers, cybersecurity firm Proofpoint reported. Reuters identified former White House official Alex Engler as one of the targets of the campaign.
The agents focused on a small group of organizations shaping American AI regulation and guidelines. Proofpoint noted that this shift suggests a strategic interest in gaining insights into U.S. policymaking and geopolitical strategy rather than pursuing traditional technology theft.
