Perplexity's Mac application now combines cloud-based frontier models with local processing to handle AI agent workflows. This hybrid compute system manages search, planning, and reasoning in the cloud while delegating tasks involving sensitive files—such as litigation or tax returns—to a model running on the user's Apple Silicon processor. The feature requires macOS 15+ and uses a "Privacy Gate" to detect personally identifiable information (PII) before any data is transmitted to a server.

The company open-sourced the PII classifier used to trigger local workloads and currently supports local models including Gemma 4 and a post-trained Qwen 3.8 27B. Perplexity also integrated a Coinbase connector to enable agentic trading and market monitoring for its users. A live demonstration of "Portable Computer," a fully local runtime, is scheduled for September 2 on Nvidia DGX Spark hardware.
