The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles recorded an increase in autonomous vehicle registrations on September 2, expanding the company's local operational capacity. This update brought the fleet to 420 registered vehicles, following an addition of 106 Model Ys just before the Cybercab launch event in Austin this Thursday. Passengers in the city have already reported taking unsupervised rides in the back seat with no driver in the front seats.

Tesla's autonomous vehicles have driven 380,000 miles without a human operator, trailing Waymo's 220 million miles. The company asserts its robotaxi is the only US model that can be mass produced without a federal exemption. This fleet growth follows a recent expansion of the Austin service area to 264 square miles and a 115% increase in the Dallas operational zone.
