The AI startup has launched an automated research intern named Astra to accelerate the development of more capable models. CEO Sam Altman told TIME that OpenAI plans to achieve an internal system qualifying as artificial general intelligence by the end of 2026, adding that these efforts run on hundreds of thousands of GPUs.

These ambitions follow a period of instability including key personnel departures, rogue AI agents, and major lawsuits. The details appear in a TIME cover story based on interviews with more than 20 company leaders and rivals, in which Altman admitted the firm had "missteps as a company."
