A new casting facility in Bastrop, Texas, will manufacture blades and vanes for large gas turbines. Elon Musk said the in-house production will accelerate the deployment of natural gas power by up to 18 months, bypassing external suppliers that are sold out into the early 2030s. The foundry is intended to ease power shortages for AI data centers.
Tesla and SpaceX are each building 100GW per year of solar production capacity to eventually replace natural gas. Musk estimated that roughly 15GW of AI compute produced in 2027 cannot be turned on that year because of bottlenecks in transformers, wiring, liquid-cooling, and networking.
