Internal documents reveal that executives at Meta sought to automate the daily responsibilities of thousands of employees to become an "AI native" organization. CEO Mark Zuckerberg canceled planning for reductions that would have shrunk many teams by as much as 60% just hours before a scheduled layoff wave in May, citing employee protests and data that showed AI agents were ineffective.
The strategy originated during a January leadership retreat at Zuckerberg's Hawaii compound to reimagine the company's workforce. While the business has performed strongly, the internal push to replace staff with automation has led to rock-bottom morale and the loss of top engineering talent.
