U.S. and Chinese officials will hold dialogues to prevent powerful AI models from falling into the hands of non-state actors. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the talks on AI guardrails and tariff cuts for $30 billion in non-strategic goods on each side are part of the lead-up to a late September summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.

Bessent will urge G20 nations at a finance meeting to reassess trade terms to lower global imbalances, citing China's $1.2 trillion trade surplus. He argued that tougher trade barriers would encourage Beijing to shift its economy from exports toward domestic demand.
