A July 29 inspection of the DataOne AI data center revealed 62 unauthorized natural gas generators polluting the surrounding community. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection fined the Microsoft linked operator $1.07 million, which the agency describes as the state's largest ever enforcement action against a data center. A separate thermal drone investigation found that at least 45 of the unpermitted generators were operating simultaneously, releasing nitrogen oxides and other pollutants. DataOne disputes the state's determination that the generators were temporary but stated it will seek the necessary permits for the equipment. The company plans to transition to permanent onsite power utilizing Bloom Energy fuel cells.
