President Donald Trump warned that slowing AI development would play into China’s hands during a call to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who put him on speakerphone while onstage at the All-In Summit on Sept. 14. “The robots will not be taking over. The AI will not be taking over the rest of the world. The whole thing is a hoax,” Trump said.
Huang challenged warnings from Anthropic and OpenAI, calling predictions of AI doom “not grounded in science.” He nevertheless said safety concerns and whistleblowers should be taken seriously, praising Jacob Coxon as courageous for speaking out. Nvidia supplies chips to the AI companies. Huang and Trump both described AI as a driver of economic growth and US national security.
The exchange followed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s call to moderate AI development so safeguards and the ability to control models can keep pace with their capabilities. House Speaker Mike Johnson said Trump will convene AI executives this week or next. Johnson has rejected a development moratorium, citing competition with China, while calling for lawmakers and AI companies to work out safety rules together.
