The Office of Strategic Capital is in discussions to provide funding for a Google-backed cloud-computing startup to shore up domestic data-center component manufacturing. The proposed loan of roughly $5 billion to Fluidstack would represent the largest disbursement to date from the Pentagon agency that supports companies in sectors critical to national security. The financing targets the AI buildout by providing direct capital for infrastructure.
Fluidstack specializes in AI cloud-computing and currently receives backing from Google. This potential agreement marks a shift in how the US government finances compute capacity, treating it as an essential asset for national defense instead of relying solely on private venture capital.
