Side-by-side evaluations using an internal tool called Jetski showed a preference among Google engineers for the latest Flash model over Anthropic's Opus. The upcoming Gemini 3.8 Flash, code-named 'Skimaki,' arrives as soon as Wednesday and focuses on coding performance, offering a smaller, cheaper, and faster alternative to flagship Pro series models.

Google scrapped several internal Gemini 3.5 Pro candidates that failed to provide sufficient improvements over the Flash architecture. The next flagship model, Gemini 4, is performing well in pretraining evaluations but must still complete the post-training phase of development.
