Physical construction has commenced at the Idaho National Laboratory as Oklo advances its nuclear reactor design toward completion. The project serves as a critical milestone for a planned 1.2 GW deployment in Ohio to provide dedicated electricity for Meta data centers, as hyperscalers increasingly seek reliable power for artificial intelligence.

Other technology companies are pursuing similar nuclear energy strategies, with Amazon partnering with X-energy and Google with Kairos, while Microsoft is restarting the Three Mile Island plant. TerraPower, the only company currently building a utility-scale reactor in the US, expects to announce another data center project this year. There are now 22 active reactor projects in the US and more than 130 small modular reactor designs under development globally.
