Trump Targets Laptops and Servers in Chip Tariff Expansion to Spur US Manufacturing
Regulation36d agoThe White House is evaluating a new round of semiconductor duties that would cover finished tech products such as gaming consoles and servers, according to Politico. One proposal under discussion would link tariff-free import allowances to the volume of company commitments to US chip manufacturing.
Industry representatives warned that expanded duties could increase AI data center costs and impact chip designers such as Nvidia and AMD, which rely heavily on overseas fabrication. No final tariff rate or framework has been established, and the administration is still mulling different options.
