Tether Launches Offline AI Translation Models for 19 African Languages to Expand Beyond Stablecoins
Models30d agoTether AI developed a lightweight translation model called TranslatePsy-AfriSLM that supports 19 African languages and operates locally on laptops and smartphones. The 800 million parameter open-source model functions without internet connectivity and outperformed larger systems including Qwen3.5-122B-A10B, TranslateGemma-27B, and NLLB-3.3B across the SMOL, BOUQuET, and FLORES-200 translation benchmarks.
The tool is free to use and targets hundreds of millions of people in regions where internet access is limited or paid AI services are unaffordable. This expansion into AI infrastructure, which includes European language models for a total of 28 supported tongues, marks a strategic diversification for the stablecoin issuer into healthcare and educational technology.
