ChangXin Memory Technologies started small-scale production of HBM3E, an advanced high-bandwidth memory used in AI processors like Nvidia's Blackwell GPUs. Alibaba's T-Head and Cambricon are testing the chips for potential use in products starting in 2027, with CXMT planning to expand production next year.
The move addresses restrictions preventing the Chinese AI-chip industry from buying the most advanced foreign memory. However, CXMT trails industry leaders SK Hynix, Samsung, and Micron by 3 to 5 years as the three firms mass-produce HBM4 and sample HBM4E while CXMT struggles with low yields.
