Beijing and Washington are tentatively organizing diplomatic discussions regarding artificial intelligence to occur in a few weeks, sources said. China views these talks as a major deliverable for the upcoming meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping on Sept. 24, at which the Chinese leader plans to bring a large delegation of chief executives from China's largest companies.
The US government is concerned about the potential for China to develop a future "Mythos-level" AI model, sources said. These mid-September talks provide a technical precursor to the formal Washington summit, addressing strategic competition and safety before the high-level diplomatic visit.
